Davis Earns President’s Award from State Superintendents Association
Award is latest recognition for district leader
HENRY COUNTY, GA – The Georgia School Superintendents Association (GSSA) is the latest organization to recognize Henry County Schools Superintendent Mary Elizabeth Davis after they presented her with the President’s Award during their recent fall conference.
GSSA is the professional association for public school superintendents from across the state, and each year they hold an annual conference which also includes awards and recognitions. One award presented is the President’s Award which is given to superintendents for outstanding leadership in their school systems and communities.
Griffin Regional Educational Service Agency Executive Director Dr. Stephanie Gordy shared that Davis was the sole representative up for consideration for the award from that region of the state. She had high praise for the work that has been led by Davis during her tenure as the school district’s leader.
“I am fortunate to have the honor and privilege of working with this exemplary school superintendent,” said Gordy. “Our entire region benefits from her leadership prowess.”
In honoring Davis, GSSA recognized her leadership in key areas of school district operations including student achievement, fiscal management, system operations, and community outreach and communications.
Since Davis was named leader of the 8th largest school district in Georgia in November of 2017, she has steered the development of local teaching and learning standards, support of classroom resources, budget enhancements for instruction, increased student achievement levels, strengthening of safety and security, and bolstered connections to the community through robust communication and partnerships.
GSSA Executive Director John Zauner also added that Davis is making a positive impact on students and staff in the district even in the midst of the current challenges districts are facing as a result of COVID-19.
“Dr. Mary Elizabeth Davis is a superintendent that is showing a lot of savvy decision making,” said Zauner. “Using social media in a very strategic and positive manner to promote the district achievement story. Dr. Davis is also showcasing her district/school leaders that are making an impact on the students and staff as Henry County Schools looks to create a more positive and supportive system culture as they navigate this educationally challenging environment.”
Davis noted her surprise at receiving the award and quickly pointed to the collective efforts of the Superintendent-Board Governance Team as the catalyst for the district’s achievements.
“While I am thankful for the recognition from GSSA, I am also thankful for the work we have been able to accomplish as a unified governance team here in Henry County,” said Davis. “Our work, along with that of over 6,000 employees has produced incredible results. The biggest reward is that our students are receiving a high-quality education and achieving at higher levels.”
GSSA’s Fall Bootstrap Conference was held October 14-15 at the Classic Center in Athens.
