School Meal Fees Waived through December 31, 2020

Federal relief program allows school nutrition program to provide meals at no cost

HENRY COUNTY, GA – Since the start of the pandemic, the School Nutrition Department of Henry County Schools has been busy providing meals to students even during times of building closures.  The meals provided – five breakfasts and five lunches per student – were free of charge until August 17 when the new school year started.

After a month of returning to the paid service, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is providing temporary relief and extending waivers to school districts that participated in the Summer Food Service Program and Seamless Summer Option in order to provide free meals for students locally and all across the nation.  The support for school meals will run through December 31, 2020, or until the earmarked funds are exhausted, whichever comes first.

“We are so appreciative of the USDA for extending these waivers to school nutrition programs like ours,” said Kantrell Brown, Executive Director of the HCS School Nutrition Department.  “We can return to providing five lunches and five breakfasts for free to all students in our district regardless of eligibility requirements.”

Henry County Schools will soon begin allowing students to return to campus, and the free meals will be available for all students regardless of if they are on campus or remaining as a remote-learner.  The first phase of students returning to campus begins on September 28, the week after the district’s fall break.

“We will continue providing our meals for pick-up by remote learners on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., but starting the week after Fall Break on Wednesday, September 30, our remote learning students will be able to pick up their meals directly from their regular school as opposed to having to go to one of the ten distribution sites from where we were previously serving families,” added Brown.  “Students returning to campus and choosing the school lunch and breakfast choices will receive those daily from the cafeteria.”

All remote learners will still need to log on to MySchoolBucks.com to pre-order their meal plans each week between Thursday and Monday.

District leaders encourage those families believing they qualify for free or reduced-price meals to complete the online application by September 30.  This support for families will be needed for when the temporary federal assistance ends at the end of the year.  The free and reduced lunch application can be completed using the Infinite Campus Parent Portal.
