Message to Families Regarding 5th Grade Assessment Question/Answer

Message to HCS Families

Henry County Schools officials were recently made aware of a question on a 5th-grade district assessment that contained an answer with a derogatory connotation.  The assessment, designed to assess the 5th-grade Georgia standard SS5H1d: describe the reasons people immigrated to the United States, from where they emigrated, and where they settled, covers a question pertaining to reasons why immigrants left Europe for America in the early 1900s.  One of the reasons immigrants left Europe was due to their being forced to live in communities, often under difficult circumstances, termed at that time as ghettos.  In today’s context, ghetto is an offensive term, and as such, we have removed the question from the assessment and are conducting a further review of all teaching and assessment tools for this standard.  We apologize for this matter and appreciate it being brought to our attention to address.
