Board of Education Adopts 2021-22, 2022-23 School Year Calendars

Future calendars include 178 instructional days and hold familiar breaks for families and students

HENRY COUNTY, GA – The upcoming school year is what currently occupies the minds of educators and school community members alike, but that does not mean that planning the academic calendars for the school years that follow has to wait.  The Henry County Board of Education took action during their May board meeting to pass the school calendars for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 school years.

The board took into consideration comments from the public prior to voting unanimously on the two future calendars.

One such consideration included the addition of three parent-teacher conference days in October.  These three days were requested for teachers to have a traditional individualized meeting with parents and guardians, especially for the younger students and grade levels.  To support families during early release, the afterschool enrichment program is considering additional opportunities for students who need to participate on early release days only in future years.

The passage of calendars this far in advance follows the district practice of setting dates for school years and their corresponding breaks well in advance so the district can plan accordingly and families know what to expect.

Features of both new calendars include:

  • 178 instructional days (up from the current 177 instructional days)
  • Midweek starts to each school year during the first week of August
  • Weeklong breaks in September, November, February, and April
  • Two-week semester break starting in December
  • Three days of parent-teacher conferences in October
  • Graduation and end of school year prior to the start of Memorial Day weekend

Approving the calendars this far in advance does give the board members and district officials the opportunity to amend the calendars if it is warranted.

“We want to be able to provide our school community with an outlook to prepare for the future,” said Superintendent Mary Elizabeth Davis.  “We know that something can change between now and that first day of school in 2021, but our board feels confident presenting these calendars to the public for planning purposes.  No one knew two years ago when the current calendar was approved that the district, state, nation, and world would be dealing with a shutdown that forced schools to use remote learning.  There is flexibility in our planning if needed.”

The approved calendars will be placed on the district website for public consumption this month.
