Partnering with Elected Officials to Support Boys & Girls Club of Henry County

Boys & Girls Club, HCS Agree to Lease of Former Middle School

Portion of Henry County Middle School to be new home of afterschool program

HENRY COUNTY, GA – The Henry County Board of Education made their partnership official with the Henry County Board of Commissioners and City of McDonough to bring a Boys & Girls Club to Henry County during the November board meeting on Monday, November 11.  They unanimously agreed to lease the facility space, while the other two government bodies are meeting start-up and operating costs.

The school district has been involved in talks and the exploratory phase with various local government leaders over the past few months to see how the three groups could work together to bring the nationally-known youth organization to the county.  The financial commitment of the city and county government, along with the leasing of space by the school system provided the capital needed to get the program up and running.

There were many individuals from the various partnering entities in attendance at the monthly meeting, including county leaders, city leaders, and state court judges, and the official action taken to approve the lease agreement drew loud applause from everyone in the audience.

The new club will be operated by the Boys & Girls Club of Central Georgia, under the direction of Phillip Bryant who was also in attendance for the big news.  The space being leased will be officially turned over to the group on January 1, 2020.  An official opening of the club to young people has not been determined yet.

Chief Operations Officer Josh Malcom made a formal presentation before the board earlier in the day to detail all that would be involved in making this space suitable for the new club.

To get to this point marks a longtime accomplishment after many efforts over the past 30 years have not been successful.  All school board members were equally pleased and excited to support the effort and provide another option for our youth to have an outlet for growth and development.

Board Vice-Chair Holly Cobb shared her elation over the decision to move forward in support of the club in Henry County.

“I’m grateful for the collaborative efforts of each of our governments - the county, the city, and school board,” said Cobb.  “It’s amazing what we can accomplish if we all come together.  It’s really what makes our county such a great place to be.”

The initial lease is a five-year agreement that allows the club to utilize the gym, classroom space, football field, and softball field.
