Governor’s Honors Program Participants from HCS Announced

Students from district will study at Berry College during summer break

HENRY COUNTY, GA – The Governor’s Office of Student Achievement has announced the finalists for this year’s Governor’s Honor Program, and several students from Henry County Schools have been notified of their selection to the prestigious summer program.

A total of 14 high school students from Henry County Schools have been selected to participate in the summer enrichment program in Rome, Georgia during June and July.  This number represents an increase of six students compared to last year.  There were six schools in the district that had students selected for the program in 2018.  This year, there are eight schools with student representation.

Students had to go through several rounds of rigorous interviews to be considered and selected for the program.  The process is designed to identify the best of the best students from across the state to take part in a rich summer learning experience. Henry County Schools also had one student selected as an alternate.

Starting Sunday, June 16 on the campus of Berry College, students’ days will be filled studying in specific areas of interest for which they were nominated and interviewed.  Evenings in the program are spent engaged in seminars, recreational activities, concerts, and performances.  The program concludes on July 13.

According to the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement, the Governor’s Honors Program is “designed to provide students with academic, cultural, and social enrichment necessary to become the next generation of global critical thinkers, innovators, and leaders.”

Each year, nearly 3,000 students from across the state apply and interview for the chance to participate in this unique program.  Several hundred students are then selected for the program after going through the application process.

This year will mark the 56th summer the program has hosted students.  It is the longest continually running program of its kind in the nation.
