Tussahaw Jr. Beta Club Wins $10,000 from Star 94.1’s Jeff & Jenn Show
Student service project earns group grand recognition
HENRY COUNTY, GA – An amount like $10,000 can go a long way in helping those in need and that is exactly what Tussahaw Elementary’s Junior Beta Club plans on doing with the money they received from a local radio station morning show’s contest.
The Jeff & Jenn Show on Star 94.1 recently held a contest titled the Give Back Giveaway. The show partnered with Delta Community Credit Union on the contest with the grand prize being $10,000 for the winning group. The premise was to honor groups who were doing remarkable things to give back to their communities.
The Junior Beta Club, under the guidance of teacher Heather Pouliot, was a part of a larger effort in the community to support the Empty Bowls Project. This larger project had a goal of raising funds to support Backpack Buddies, a supplemental nutrition program aimed at providing economically disadvantaged students with food to keep them from going hungry while not at school.
The Tussahaw Elementary club students took part in the Empty Bowls Project by constructing bowls, selling tickets to the event, and assisting with operations during the event. This effort caught the attention of the radio show’s contest review committee when the application was submitted.
Jenn Hobby, co-host of the morning radio show, stated during the surprise pep rally, “As soon as we found out about what the Junior Beta Club was doing, all of us had tears in our eyes and goosebumps because of how much love you’re showing your community.”
Teachers, students, and staff were able to able to provide a grand entrance for Pouliot. She was surprised and humbled to have her group receive this recognition due to the fact that it is all about community service and giving back to others as their central focus.
As might be expected, the group already has plans to use a large portion of the funds to give back to Backpack Buddies and another local supplemental meal effort called Operation Lunchbox. A small portion of the money will be used to fund the expenses for her students to attend the Junior Beta Club state convention.
“They are a great group of kids,” said Pouliot in reference to her 37 club members, each one of them in the fifth grade. “We work on service projects year round. It does my heart good to know that our kids took part in something where they got to give back to other kids in our community."
