 Gittemeier Signs with West Point

Union Grove High School Senior Accepted to West Point, Earns STAR Recognition

All-around student continues to collect honors, awards

HENRY COUNTY, GA – It rarely gets to be such a banner year for high school students, but Union Grove High School senior Justin Gittemeier is leaving his mark on his school leading up to graduation.

The most recent and notable of achievements transpired on Tuesday, April 11 when United States Congressman Jody Hice (GA-10) visited Gittemeier’s school for an official signing ceremony to mark the accomplished student’s acceptance and entry into the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Classmates, school administrators, and family members were in attendance for the grand occasion, and remarks were given by Congressman Hice to note the importance of Gittemeier’s decision and subsequent acceptance into West Point.

“An appointment to any of our military academies is a huge deal,” shared Hice. “One of the real exciting things I get to do as a representative is to participate in ceremonies such as this.”

While the future is shaping up for this well-rounded student, time still remains for him to earn more honors and recognition before graduating on May 26.

In addition to competing with SkillsUSA in quiz bowl, being an accomplished wrestler for the Union Grove Wolverine wrestling team, and being named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist, Gittemeier was named STAR Student for his high school earlier in the year.

The latest honor enabled him to select Renee Stanfield as his STAR Teacher for the student/teacher recognition program hosted by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation.  The recognition is bestowed upon the senior student with the highest SAT score in their class at his or her respective school.  All STAR students and teachers then compete locally for the school district honor.

Gittemeier and Stanfield were named Henry County STAR Student and Teacher before then moving on to be named Region 3B winners.  Region 3B consists of Butts County, Clayton County, Coweta County, Douglas County, Fayette County, Griffin-Spalding County, Henry County, Lamar County, Pike County, and Rockdale County school systems.

The student-teacher duo now has the chance to be named state winners during a ceremony in late April.
