HCS Will Expand Pre-K Class Offerings in 2016-2017 School Year

HENRY COUNTY, GA – Henry County Schools was recently notified by the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL) of approval to begin offering a limited number of general education Pre-K classes for the 2016-2017 school year.

Three classes will be offered initially, with one class each at Fairview Elementary, Oakland Elementary, and Wesley Lakes Elementary.  Each class will be capped at 22 students.

Preference for the seats in each class will be given to those students living in the respective school zones.  If there are more requests than spaces available, a lottery system will be enacted.  Families living outside of those school zones can still apply for a spot in one of the classes but will only be considered if there are not enough registrations from families living within the school zone.

The school system will also provide transportation for students accepted into one of the classes so long as they reside in the school zone.

This is the first time Henry County Schools has offered a general education, full-day Pre-K program.  There has been Pre-K for special needs children in recent years, but now the school system is using Georgia Lottery funding to support implementation of Pre-K in these first three schools for general education purposes.  The schools were chosen based on a rubric established around identified needs throughout the county.  Discussions and further development will continue with regards to expansion of the program in the future.

“This is a big step for our district to further meet our mission of ensuring success for each student,” said Superintendent Rodney Bowler.  “Studies show that Pre-K has a profound impact on the learning achievements of students enrolled in quality programs.  We are excited to introduce this opportunity for families and students in our district.”

The deadline to be considered for spaces in one of the three classes is noon on Friday, July 8.  The registration packet can be found online at www.henry.k12.ga.us, or it can be obtained in the front offices of one of the three schools. Once completed, packets and required documentation can then be delivered to the applicable school.

Summer office hours for elementary schools are from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.  All of Henry County Schools will be closed on July 4 for Independence Day.
