"Check Mate!" We love hearing those words in Chess Club! Welcome to the web page of Rock Spring Elementary School's Chess Club! We are going into our 8th year of having a chess club here at RSE. This club provides an after school opportunity for students to engage in playing the challenging game of chess. It is currently open to all 2nd through 5th grade students who already have a basic knowledge of how to play the game.
Chess Club meets each Monday from 2:30 to 3:30. Our first chess club meeting will be on Monday, August 28, 2017, and our final meeting/party on May 14, 2018 (see below for dates of all meetings). Students who want to join the club have to fill out a Parent Permission Slip (see link below) & return it to their teacher. We love to show our chess club spirit by wearing chess club t-shirts each Monday. You can order a t-shirt for your child by filling out and returning the form (see the link on the left) along with your payment. More information will be coming home to our chess club members so be on the lookout.
We are excited to announce that 4th grade teacher, Ms. Lamb, is joining us this year as a co-sponsor of Chess Club!! We could also use extra hands during Chess Club; so, if you or another adult you know plays chess is has some free time on Monday afternoons, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com. We are also asking for donations for snacks to eat while playing chess. These include bottled water (small ones) and individual bags of chips/pretzels/crackers. Occasionally, we will ask for donations of candy for Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine's Day.
In addition to our Chess Club meetings, we also take a team of 5 players to the county chess tournament that takes place in May. We typically hold try-outs in November-December for students interested in being part of the chess competition team to represent RSE at the tournament. At the May 2017 county chess tournament, RSE Chess Team placed third in the county! We are excited about competing at next year's competition!! Please check out the links for more information or email me if you have any questions.
