    General Information

    Description

    This course is designed to give all students an overview of common concepts in earth science including, but not limited to meteorology, geology, astronomy, oceanography, resources, and human impact on the earth.

    Expectations and Goals

    Sixth grade students use records they keep and analyze the data they collect. They observe and explain how an aspect of weather can affect a weather system. They use different models to represent systems such as the solar system and the sun/moon/earth system. They use what they observe about the earth’s materials to infer the processes and timelines that formed them. Sixth graders will be encouraged to write instructions, describe observations, and show information in graphical form. When analyzing the data they collect, sixth graders can recognize relationships in simple charts and graphs and find more than one way to interpret their findings. The students replicate investigations and compare results to find similarities and differences.

    Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the uses and conservation of various natural resources and how they impact Earth.

    Assessment Schedule

    Pretests

    Pretests, which are not graded, are administered prior to each unit. Information gathered from pretests is used to assess strength and weaknesses in content mastery in other that more individualized instruction can be provided.

    Quizzes

    Quizzes will be administered on a weekly basis after the first week of school. Students’ mastery of information from the week prior will be assessed EVERY Friday. Students are to use class notes and worksheets completed in class for review.

    Grading Scale

    90 -100 = A - Outstanding level of performance

    Indicates that the pupil has done excellent work and has mastered the course objectives, consistently does excellent work with skill and thoroughness; and consistently has applied knowledge gained to new situations.

    80 - 89 = B - High level of performance
    Indicates that the pupil has done above average work, mastered almost all of the course objectives; and has applied knowledge gained to new situations.

    70 - 79 = C - Satisfactory level of performance
    Indicates that the pupil has done average work and has mastered many of the objectives of the course.

    69 and Below - Unsatisfactory level of performance
    Indicates that the pupil's work fell below a level of acceptance for the course and was unsatisfactory.

    Student grades are updated frequently in Infinite Campus. Please check your student’s progress on a regular basis.

     

    Make-up Work

    Students will be allowed the duration of the unit to complete unit assignments. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure they check for assignments they missed while they were out.

    Late Work

    Late work is accepted. However, ten points will be deducted for each day that the work is late. After the unit is complete, the maximum grade will be a 50.

    Labs

    Students are expected to learn and follow Labs Safety Guidelines.

     

    Projects and Enrichment Activities

    The types of projects assigned may include research, oral presentations, power points, digital posters and other investigations. Students will receive the directions and rubrics well in advance of the due date.

     

    Extra Help

    Extra help is available to students at various times. Students may visit me during instructional focus for assistance. I will also meet with students during lunch.
