I would like to welcome everyone to the 2017-2018 school year at Ola Middle School. This is my 8th year teaching at Ola Middle and my fourth year in 6th grade. I have two children, Jessica - 25 and Justice - 20 and one grandson, Aidan, who is 5. He just started kindergarten at Rock Spring. My son is in the Navy and is currently stationed in Spain.
I am excited to have my new students this year and look forward to a wonderful year of learning. The majority of our homework assignments will be found on Edmodo. Every Monday the students will be assigned a RACE paragraph that will be on Edmodo. This will be due on Thursday. Each week we will be learning five new vocabulary words that will be from our curriculum. Every 2nd week the students will be quizzed on the 10 previous vocabulary words they have learned. We also do weekly mentor sentences in class. The students will be quizzed on these twice a month. I try to give the majority of work as classwork so they are not overwhelmed at home. There will be projects assigned throughout the year so keep an eye out for those.
Infinite Campus - this is a great resource for checking your child's grades and progress. This year the grades will be listed by competencies instead of standards. All of my students have a list of the compentencies in their Language Arts notebook. This should be used as a tool when checking Infinite Campus. Grades are updated weekly so make sure you log on to see how your child is doing in each of their classes. I also send out messages through Infinite Campus. They may be regarding missing work, upcoming tests, project information, or anything else I feel is important for you to know about.
What can you do to help your child have a successful first year in middle school?
Your child should be reading for at least 30 minutes a night. Reading helps your child with both fluency and comprehension. Make sure they choose what they would like to read to ensure success. There will be a few projects throughout the year in which your child will be required to read a specific book they chose from the media center.
Agendas- check their agenda nightly for homework assignments as well as upcoming tasks or deadlines. PLEASE make sure your child has the following supplies daily: writing utensils, their spiral notebook, paper, and a book to read.
Please feel free to contact me via email anytime with questions or concerns. I look forward to a wonderful year full of learning and fun.
