• Welcome to music at Smith-Barnes Elementary!

My name is Mary Miller, and I am one of two music teachers here at SBE.  I received my Bachelor of Music Education from Georgia College and State University, and my Master of Science from Walden University, as well as completing additional graduate studies at Georgia State University.  I began my teaching career in 1989 at Jonesboro Junior High School in Clayton County.  I have taught all levels of music, Pre-K through high school.  In May 2019 I retired from full-time teaching and joined the staff at SBE as a part-time music teacher in August of the same year.  I really enjoy the family-oriented atmosphere here at SBE!

I am married to my high school sweetheart and we have one son who is a sophomore at Kennesaw State University (Owl Nation!).  In my spare time I enjoy musical activities, reading, cooking, gardening, spending time with family and friends, and spoiling my three kitties.  One of my proudest accomplishments is earning my third degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do at age 50!

I believe that music is essential to a well-rounded education. Our students will be performing, creating, listening, and analyzing during their music classes each week.  I'm excited about the possibilities for music instruction during this time of virtual learning.  Please do not hesitate to reach out should you have any questions about our class activities or if your child is interested in pursuing additional musical studies.  I look forward to traveling down the musical road with everyone this year!
