    Welcome Message
    Greetings Oakland Owl Parents!
Let me start by stating that I am looking forward to a fantastic year with the staff and students at Oakland Elementary! Goooo....OWLS!
Just to tell you a little bit about myself, I am a native of a small town called Eatonton, Georgia. It is just south of Monticello, Georgia. If you have ever heard of Rock Eagle, Uncle Remus Museum or Lake Oconee, then you have heard of my hometown. I have a house full of girls! I am the mother of four beautiful, intelligent young ladies: my oldest is a manager and continuing student at Georgia Perimeter College, my next oldest is a junior at Valdosta State University, my third daughter is a sophomore at the University of Alabama @ Birmingham, and my youngest daughter is an incoming freshman at Georgia Southern University. Needless to say, education is important to me, and I have done my best to express the value of a great education to my own children.
This is my third year in Henry County, and I am beginning my second year in the Henry County School System. Even though my time here is short, I am no stranger to the field of education. I started this journey in 2002 as a one-on-one paraprofessional, but I was placed in the kindergarten classroom as a full time paraprofessional about mid-way through the year. I worked for 3 years as a parapro, and decided to go back to school to finish the requirements to get my A.S. Degree in Education in 2006 from Georgia Military College. That same year, I transferred to Mercer University in Macon, Georgia and I went back to work as a kindergarten paraprofessional for another two years. I earned my B.S. degree in Middle Grades Education with a concentration in ELA and Social Studies in the fall of 2008, but I did not stop there. I started back going to school in 2010, and for two years, I worked very hard to earn my Masters Degree in Literacy & Language for K-6 from Kaplan University Online. I even took the GACE to become certified to teach Early Childhood Education. I worked as an inclusion paraprofessional once I got hired back into my local school system for the third time. When I upgraded to my own classroom, I worked in 4th grade for two years, and I was promoted to 5th grade where I completed five years of instructional service. Last year, I taught kindergarten and 2nd grade, all within the same year!
Here at Oakland, we have a quote that has become the mantra for this school year, and it states, "I am not a product of my circumstances; I am a product of my decisions." According to my circumstances, I was supposed to become just another statistic, but I made the decision that I wanted better, and therefore I am better. I have proven to myself and others that I am more than a conqueror. I am living proof of what can be achieved when you believe enough in yourself to try. I am a firm believer in the power of an educated mind, and it is my desire and my goal to inspire my students to believe the same. Let's have a great year!
