    Dear Oakland Elementary Families,

It is with tremendous elation and gratitude that I write this letter to you as the incoming principal of Oakland Elementary School. I am honored to become a part of the Oakland family and community.  I join you with a total of 16 years of experience in the field of elementary education, six as an Assistant Principal.  I am excited to connect my experiences with those of our wonderful staff as WE work to make the upcoming school year the absolute BEST for ALL students!

My goal each day is for EVERY student to walk the halls of OKE with the confidence that EVERY adult here has this one goal in mind:   To ensure a healthy, happy, safe, and enriching learning environment.  I firmly believe that no person can reach their full potential when the environment in which they exist is void of the aforementioned, tangible characteristics.  Furthermore, I accept the responsibility that the creation of such an environment starts with ME.

I recognize that, oftentimes, a student’s perception of their school is an extension of their parents’.  With that in mind, the largest single area upon which I have focused my work this summer has been to enhance the physical aspects of our school.  Some of these efforts are very noticeable (i.e. new front/rear parking lots, “sprucing up” the entryway, new landscape, etc.), while others are not (i.e. deep cleaning of every crevice, removal of broken furniture, etc.).  Every department within our district’s Central Office is owed a huge THANKS for their unwavering support in this endeavor!  Overall, my hope is that when our OKE families (students, parents, staff, and community members) arrive on our campus, the campus itself elicits a sense of pride!

Lastly, I pledge to put our teachers in the best possible position to succeed, as they will in turn put our children in the best possible position to succeed. I look forward to meeting all of you and please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, concerns, or ideas you would like to share.

I look forward to continuing some of the rich traditions of OKE, while working alongside each of you as we strive to reach new heights.  As the old African Proverb states, “It takes a village to raise a child.”

    Kind Regards,

    Tyrome D. Grant, Sr.
