    Welcome to Mr. Leonard's Math Page. I have taught math for 15 years in the middle school setting and this is my 4th year here at Stockbridge Middle School. Below is a brief summary of content to be learned in class and expectations of student conduct and academics. I am here as a resouce to help your student achieve success. I believe that a joint effort between teachers, students and parents leads to the best results. Feel free to contact me regarding any concerns you may have throughout the school year. 
     

    Afterschool/Morning Tutorial: Our Math Lab is available daily afterschool or in the morning. Your student must sign up with their math teacher at least one day prior to receive a pass to the math teacher covering the lab for that day needed. Morning lab is from 8am-825am and afternoon lab is from 415pm-5pm.

    Course Description:

    The overall goal of the 7th mathematics curriculum is to help students develop sound mathematical habits. Units have been developed in each domain as it pertains to the Georgia Standards of Excellence. It is desirable for students to keep the “big picture” in mind as we deal with specific goals in each unit.

     

    By the end of seventh grade, students will demonstrate Competency and 21st Century Skills regarding Georgia Standards of Excellence. The following are the units that will be covered in 7th grade math:  

     

    7th Grade

    Unit 1- Operations with Rational Numbers

    Unit 2- Expressions & Equations

    Unit 3- Ratios and Proportional Relationships

    Unit 4- Geometry

    Unit 5- Inferences

    Unit 6- Probability

     

    7th Grade: Accelerated 7B & 8th

    Unit 4- Geometry

    Unit 5- Inferences

    Unit 6- Probability

    Unit 1-Transformations, Congruency and Similarity

    Unit 2-Exponents

    Unit 3-Geometric Applications of Exponents

    Unit 4-Functions

    Unit 5 and 6-Linear Functions, Models, and Tables

    Unit 7-Solving Systems of Equations

    The seventh grade mathematics curriculum includes the following Georgia Standards of Excellence:

     Ratios and Proportional Relationships (RP)

    • Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems

    The Number System (NS)

    • Apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers

    Expressions and Equations (EE)

    • Use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions
    • Solve real‐life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations

    Geometry (G) (7b)

    • Draw, construct and describe geometrical figures and describe the relationships between them
    • Solve real-life and mathematical problems involving angle measure, area, surface area and volume

    Statistics and Probability (SP) (7b)

    • Use random sampling to draw inferences about a population
    • Draw informal comparative inferences about two populations
    • Investigate chance processes, and develop, use, and evaluate probability

     

    Accelerated classes will study the 2nd half of 7th grade (7b) and all of the 8th grade standards.

    Content standards for Grade 8 are arranged within the following domains and clusters:

    The Number System

    • Know that there are numbers that are not rational, and approximate them by rational numbers.

    Expressions and Equations

    • Work with radicals and integer exponents.
    • Understand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations.
    • Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations.

    Functions

    • Define, evaluate, and compare functions.
    • Use functions to model relationships between quantities.

     Geometry

    • Understand congruence and similarity using physical models, transparencies, or geometry software.
    • Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem.
    • Solve real world and mathematical problems involving volume of cylinders, cones and spheres.

    Statistics and Probability

    • Investigate patterns of association in bivariate data.

    Attendance:

    You are responsible for all material presented in class, including announcements about course procedures. It is your responsibility to obtain, complete, and submit assignments missed during your absence. Arrangements for late course work deemed excused should be made in advance and approved by the instructor. All make-up work from excused absences must be completed and submitted no later than three days after the absence. Quizzes and homework often include questions on material presented only in class, so performance on these directly reflects attendance. Attendance is mandatory.

    Grading Scale:

    You may expect that your grades for this course will be determined according to

    the following formula:

    A         90% or better

    B         89% - 80%

    C         79% - 71%

    D         70%

    F          Below 70%

    Academic dishonesty or cheating will result in a failing grade.

    Behavioral Expectations

    • Follow instructions the first time they are given.
    • Enter class quietly with all needed materials on time.  Do not leave your seat unless given permission.
    • Respect yourself, teachers, classroom visitors, and classmates.  Allow yourself and others to learn by not interrupting or being disruptive in class.
    • Adhere to all policies and procedures as mandated by Stockbridge Middle School and Henry County Schools.
