¡Bienvenidos a la clase de español!
In the Spanish classroom, you can expect to listen to authentic Spanish speaking and read authentic Spanish texts. You will be expected to speak and write in the target language on a daily basis. There will be plenty of opportunities to practice and review. We will integrate the 5Cs of the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning (Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities) with the 4Cs of the 21st Century Skills (Critical thinking and problem solving, Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity and innovation). By doing this, you will be able to become more fluent in the language!
So why should you study Spanish?
- To learn to communicate: Most of the communities that we live in are quite diverse. It is great to be able to talk to others in a language familiar to them because it builds that relationship and shows you are interested in them and their culture.
- To understand culture: Within the Spanish-speaking countries there are various cultures. There is music, art, food, literature and customs. Learning about different cultures help you relate to other better and gives you new perspectives on life.
- To expand career opportunities: Being bilingual or multilingual in today's global economy makes you an attractive prospect in the business world. You open yourself up to more options in many fields when you are proficient in another language.
- To improve your language skills: You may not realize it, but learning a second or third language actually helps you with your first language. You can improve your vocabulary, grammar, reading and writing. It can even improve test scores!
The best way to be successful in a world language class is to TRY! Participate in class discussions or activities without hesitation. You may make mistakes and that is okay. But without allowing yourself to make them, how can you improve? Never be afraid to speak up because your teacher will help you say things "better". Just TRY!
