• Today there is a much larger emphasis on mental math strategies.  In addition to this, teachers empower students to invent their own strategies for solving basic computational problems before teaching them a strategy or algorithm.  Here at Cotton Indian teachers spend a brief part of each day doing something called Number Talks to give children a daily opportunity to develop number sense as well as learn to articulate their mathematical thinking.  Below are some of the more common strategies students discovered throughout the elementary school years and a website that can support developing these strategies.
