    Greetings Red Oak Elementary Community,

My name is Dr. Shaakira Akbar, and I am excited to serve as the  principal of Red Oak Elementary School. Education is a part of my DNA, with two parents who are educators; I was taught from an early age the importance of knowledge and the power it possesses, my mission is to instill my love for learning into our students.

I am originally from Tallahassee, Florida. I attained a bachelor’s degree from Spelman College and went on to earn a Master’s degree in Elementary Education and Doctorate degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I have spent the last 20 years working at the elementary level in several capacities, most recently the Student Support Team Specialist, Assistant Principal, and now Principal!

I believe that all students deserve a quality and equitable educational experience. All students can learn and acquire the skills that we as educators provide for them; however, it is our duty to design strategies that are conducive to their varied learning styles and learning levels. At Red Oak Elementary, we will be intentional in our pursuit of a diverse and inclusive school with a commitment to student learning and achievement. Red Oak will remain a positive, inviting, and cohesive place for students to learn and achieve.

Not only am I excited about the work that we will do with children, I am also excited about the work we will do together. An old African proverb states, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Together we will ensure that children are safe happy, and learning each and every day. It is my promise that all decisions will be made with students’ best interest at the forefront.  As principal of Red Oak, I am committed to the academic growth of all students.  I will work collaboratively with the leadership team, teachers and staff to maintain a working environment of mutual respect and trust. It is my goal that we foster an environment at Red Oak in which students enjoy coming to each and every day, a place where students’ are #redoakready and learning becomes an experience that propels them through the remainder of their lifelong learning.

I am invested in the Henry County community as a resident and a parent of 3 children who have matriculated through Henry County Schools. I look forward to working with you and serving in a capacity that develops Georgia’s best and brightest students!

    Yours in Education,

    Shaakira Akbar, Ph.D.
