• Frequently Asked Questions

What are some of the benefits of participating in athletics?
Our athletic programs are a great source of pride to our community. Involvement in athletics helps students develop a better sense of responsibility, cooperation, self-discipline, self-confidence, and sportsmanship that will help serve them long after graduation. The lessons and values learned by participating on athletic teams last a lifetime. All Henry County coaches and athletes are expected to abide by the highest standards of fair play and sportsmanship. Our goal is to make the most positive contribution possible to the physical, emotional, and social well-being of students.

What is the academic eligibility requirement?
To be eligible to try out or to participate in an extracurricular activity, students must have a numerical grade average of 70 or better for five out of six courses based on the previous semester. This grade average must be met for each of the five courses.Connection classes may be combined and averaged for the semester to obtain two grades that would consist of course five and six.

For example, if your child plans to play basketball which begins in the fall semester, then he/she must have passed five out six of his/her classes from the spring semester of the previous school year.  This includes passing 3 out of 4 academic classes, as well as an average of the connections classes.

Is a physical required? --- DOWNLOAD HERE
Yes. In order to participate in athletics, you must have the requited athletic paperwork packet on file with your school Athletic Director. Additionally, you must have the Henry County Information and Consent form on file with your school Athletic Director (Coach Cohen @ HMS). Both forms are required prior to being allowed to tryout and can be found below under "Athletic Forms."

Can 6th graders participate as team members or managers?
No. The Henry County Middle School Athletic League’s By-Laws states that no 6th grade students may participate in HCMSAL sanctioned sports.  All sports offered at HMS as well as any other county public school are open only to eligible 7th and 8th grade boys and girls.  This includes 6th graders acting as managers for any team.

What other eligibility requirements are there?
A student is eligible to participate once as a 7th grader and once as an 8th grader. If a child is retained for any reason, he/she is considered ineligible for athletics during that school year. Eligibility is also determined by age/grade level as well.  A 7th grader cannot reach their 15th birthday before May 1st of their 7th grade year.  An 8th grader cannot reach their 16th birthday before May 1st of their 8th grade year.
