Substitute Teaching
Minimum Qualifications:
- Substitute Teachers must be 21 years of age or 18 years of age and have completed fifteen quarter or nine semester hours of college credit.
- Substitute Teachers must have a minimum of either a high school diploma or Graduate Equivalency Diploma (GED). A Bachelor’s Degree or higher is preferred.
- The GACE Paraprofessional Assessment is required for any substitute teacher with less than an Associate’s Degree or 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours of acceptable college credit.
- The Substitute Teacher must be a person of high integrity, excellent character, and good reputation.
- All substitute teachers are specifically required to attend the Henry County Substitute Teacher Workshop prior to being approved as a substitute teacher. (Substitute training from outside agencies are not accepted)
Applicants with a high school diploma, GED, or who have earned less than 60 semester or 90 quarter hours of acceptable college credit are required to pass the GACE Paraprofessional Assessment to be qualified for consideration as a Substitute Teacher. Substitute teaching is not a full-time job. This position is considered "on-call" as needed, with no guarantee of hours of employment. Substitute teachers are not eligible to draw unemployment wages. [Campbell v. Poythress, 216 Georgia Appeals 834 (1995)]
Substitute teaching daily pay rates effective July 1, 2017:
Elementary School
$80/day – less than a Bachelor’s degree
$85/day – Bachelor’s degree or higher
$90/day – hold a valid Georgia teaching certificate
$95/day – retired Henry County Schools certified educator
Long-term (same classroom for ten or more consecutive days)
Substitute teachers who are working in Paraprofessional positions in the classroom or as a Media Center Paraprofessional or Computer Lab Paraprofessional are not eligible to receive the long term pay with the exception of Autism III, EBD, MOID, OI, SID/PID, ESE-K-2 Transition, and ESE-Pre-K paraprofessional substitutes. (Effective 19-20 school year)
$85/day – less than a Bachelor’s degree
$90/day – Bachelor’s degree or higher
$105/day – hold valid Georgia teaching certificate
$110/day – retired Henry County Schools certified educator
Middle/High School
$85/day – less than a Bachelor’s degree
$90/day – Bachelor’s degree or higher
$95/day – hold a valid Georgia teaching certificate
$100/day – retired Henry County Schools certified educator

To receive the higher rate of pay, your transcript, with the degree conferred, or your valid Georgia teaching certificate, must be on file with the Human Resource Services Department.
Sometimes you may be called to serve for less than a full day. If you work an 8 hour day, you will receive your full daily rate of pay. If you work for 6 hours, you will receive ¾ of your daily rate, and if you work for 4 hours, you will receive ½ of your daily rate of pay. Anything less than a full day will be paid on a pro-rated basis.
School hours for the 2019-2020 school year are as follows:
Elementary – 7:45am – 2:25pm
Middle – 8:45am – 3:55pm
High – 8:15am – 3:25pm
