Favorite memory/moment in career - "One of my favorite memories as a teacher was this past school year. During a Getting to Know You activity at the beginning of the year, one of my ESOL scholars told me that she did not feel smart and that she never got good grades on a test. For the first few months of school, she would not participate in discussions and had no confidence in herself. Throughout the year we worked on building her confidence in several ways such as having her come in early for tutoring where we would preview a lesson or a text that was going to be covered in class that week. In December when this scholar took her exam for ELA, she immediately closed her device without even looking at her grade. The following morning when she arrived for class, she ran up to me and started crying and hugging me so tightly. When I asked her what was wrong she said, “I passed my exam Mrs. Byron. I can't believe I got a B!” I smiled at her and told her that I was very proud of her. She replied, “Nobody ever believed that I was smart except you. Thank you for teaching me how to understand my work.” My heart melted and I simply returned the hug. This is the reason why I continue to teach year after year. Students need someone who believe in them and I enjoy being that someone"
Fun Fact - "I was born and raised on the beautiful island of St. Croix which located in the US Virgin Islands. As a child, I appeared in many television commercials promoting tourism in the Virgin Islands."
