My name is Rona Butler, and I will be your child’s Speech Therapist for the 2020-2021 school year. This year marks my 15th year of providing speech and language services in the Georgia Public School setting, and my 2nd year at Union Grove High School. I have worked in a variety of other settings including pediatric clinics, hospitals, rehab facilities, and home health. I truly enjoy working with both children and adults, and what better way to channel this energy, than with high school students that are transitioning into the adult world. I have spent over half of my career in the high school setting, and I truly love working with teenagers.
Although we will begin our speech therapy sessions virtually this year, please know that I will continue to provide the same quality services to your child as if we were face to face. Therapy sessions will continue to consist of small group, individual, and consultative sessions via Google Meet. Thinking outside of the box, I will also incorporate phone calls for some students, as this is an awesome way to address conversation skills. This also gives me a view of carryover skills outside of our traditional therapy room. I am very excited about this!
One of the keys to your child achieving success with communication skills, whether virtually or face to face, is YOU! I encourage you to take an active role in enhancing your child’s speech and language abilities, by encouraging communication in their natural environment. While students are at home participating in virtual learning, this is an awesome time to have your child make phone calls to various businesses in the area to order food, inquire about a product, or job offerings. Give your child feedback on how they performed. Other opportunities to increase communication skills include: allowing your child to order their food at the drive thru, encouraging them to call a friend vs. text, and simply just engaging in conversation with them about their day. For students who communicate through personal AAC devices, I encourage parents to consistently engage with your child by asking them questions that will allow them to make choices utilizing their devices, as well as allow them to make requests. It is very important that we continue promote intentional communication. If you ever need resources, please check out some of the links on my webpage or email me directly. I will be more than happy to assist.
I am looking forward to this being a wonderful school year! I can’t wait until we are all back together again!
