This week in 5th grade our students are focusing on comparing and contrasting in ELA. This is an important skill because it allows students to better understand the characters, setting, and problems in the text. Practicing comparing and contrasting different parts of the text helps students to better understand what they read. In math the students are continuing to practice solving and evaluating problems involving parentheses. They are also working on gaining a better understanding of the place value system and how moving a digit from one place to another changes the value by 10.
In science the students are continuing to explore classification and are working on how scientists classify plants in a variety of ways. In social studies the students are finishing up their unit on Turn of the Century America and are reading and writing about major events during the time, including immigration.
During the ELA block the 5th grade students are working on comparing and contrasting characters, setting, and events in a variety of text. The students are working on writing a personal narrative about a small moment or event in their life. They are also working on improving their writing stamina so that they are able to write for longer periods of time later in the year.
Math block has the 5th grade students moving into the numbers and base 10 standards, starting with place value and the value of a digit as it is moved to a different column on the place value chart. The students are also beginning to explore the powers of 10 in relationship to place value and continuing to review the order of operations.
In science the students are exploring classification of plants and animals and comparing and creating models for classification. In social studies the students are continuing to read about Turn of Century America, focusing on inventions, the Spanish American War, and immigration.
This week at Oakland Elementary the fifth grade students are working on discovering the theme of a story and supporting their ideas with text evidence. In math the students are exploring order of operation and the use of brackets, parenthesis, and braces in problems. In science the students are creating ways to classify animals by creating a model and exploring different ways scientists use taxonomy to classify animal.
