Plates On The Move 4-square booklet.docDivergent Boundary Definition: Place where two plates move apart, or diverge
Describe the type of Stress: Tension- pulls on the crust, stretching rock so that it becomes thinner in the middle. This stress occurs where two plates are being pulled apart. Ex: Like pulling apart a warm piece of bubblegum.
Name the type of Fault: Normal Faults (details: fault is at an angle, so one block lies above the fault while the other block lies below the fault. The block that lies above is called the hanging wall. The block that lies below is called the footwall.)
Feature formed/ Geologic Event: Creates a Rift Valley or deep valley (Ex: Rio Grande in New Mexico) Earthquakes can occur along these faults & volcanoes may form where magma reaches the surface. Seafloor Spreading occurs at divergent boundaries where new ocean floor is added as magma bubbles up in breaks in the crust.
Convergent Boundary Definition: Places where plates crash or crunch together
Describe the type of Stress: Compression- squeezes rock until it folds or breaks. One rock pushes against another rock like a trash compactor.
Name the type of Fault: Reverse faults (details: Same as normal faults but the blocks move in opposite directions. The hanging wall moves up relative to the footwall.)
Feature formed/ Geologic Event: Builds Mountain ranges slowly over millions of years, old rock is recycled, or volcanoes form at subduction zones where oceanic crust may dive under the edge of continental crust. Ex: Rocky Mountains
Transform Boundary Definition: Places where plates slide past each other
Describe the type of Stress: Shearing- stress that pushes a mass of rock in two opposite directions. Can cause a rock to break and slip apart or change its shape.
Name the type of Fault: Strike-slip faults- the rocks on either side of the fault slip past each other side-ways, with little up or down motion.
Feature formed/ Geologic Event: Causes Earthquakes when the rock snaps form the pressure Ex: San Andreas Fault, California
