Diversity Objectives and Strategies for 2015 to 2019 opens with a statement of “Ensuring Success for Each Student”, and has evolved to the concept of "we're better together". In order to realize our full mission and vision we are committed to actively fostering diversity, inclusion and cultural competencies throughout our school system. To that end, with collaboration with our professional learning department and other community and business leaders, we have designed a plan to include:
Goal I: Develop a comprehensive curriculum that is inclusive, reflects cultural competency, and promotes contributions by all races, creeds, and cultures
Objective 1: To assist staff in including cultural competent objectives, strategies, services, and activities in their Professional Development Plans
Strategy 1.1 Conduct a Cultural Competency Audit (Faculty- Staff- Community).
Strategy 1.2 Conduct a Cultural Competency Survey (Students- Faculty-Staff Community).
Strategy 1.3 Design “ Building Trust Experiences” in-order to develop competencies and pedagogies to engage populations and create a new narrative (e.g. Project-based Service Learning Experiences, Leadership Lead Inclusive Discussions, Engaging Non-Biased Presentations, etc.).
Strategy 1.4 Establish a climate of constructive collaboration in regards to this personal and professional journey of greater understanding and competence.
Objective 2: To establish a professionally trained school-based Cultural Competence Committee to ensure that a comprehensive cultural diversity platform is constructed/ implemented at all educational, behavioral, discipline, climate, and school improvement levels
Strategy 2.1 Staff members will identify a Diverse Resource Personnel derived from the Cultural Audit and Assessment Survey.
Strategy 2.2 The Cultural Competence Committee will engage in a multi-tiered program with shared reading on items such as Social Dominance, reflective conversations on Social Justice joint planning sessions, and professional development experiences to increase their own cultural competency.
Strategy 2.3: Identifying clear public markers that craft an “Equity Vision” that is seamless throughout the District.
Objective 3: To increase racial, cultural, linguistic, and economic awareness in instructional practices to ensure the Personalized Learning paradigm shift
Strategy 3.1: Instructional materials should be reviewed for cultural diversity content.
Strategy 3.2: Instructors develop units of study that emphasize age, race, culture, gender identity, religion, socio-economic status, sexual orientation (perceived or known), and people with disabilities.
Strategy 3.3: Emphasis of cultural competencies should be embedded in the current curriculum when and where appropriate.
Objective 4: To promote classroom environments and materials that reflect diverse populations
Strategy 4.1: Relevant instructional materials that reflect diversity, (e.g. multi-media materials, visuals, technology) that will be identified and obtained.
Objective 5: To evaluate our current library resources to include additional cultural competent material
Strategy 5.1: School librarians will obtain diversity materials and organize them in the library in a search-friendly system.
Objective 6: To develop a listing of available supplementary and on-line resources that reflect diversity and promote contributions by a variety of communities.
Strategy 6.1: A list of suggested supplementary materials that can be used to promote cultural competency will be developed.
Goal II: Provide an environment that aids in the development of a positive self-image for all students
Objective 1: To continue to encourage recruitment of a diverse faculty and staff reflective of the student body
Strategy 1.1 Leaders will be trained in the interview and selection process of cultural competent employees, faculty and staff.
Strategy 2.2: Forums for open discussions with various topics of concern may be established. Community involvement is highly recommended.
Objective 3: To provide opportunities for students to share their perceptions of the school environment
Strategy 3.1: All schools will utilize their School Climate Surveys to gage narratives and collect data for school improvement and community awareness.
Objective 4: To continually renew the commitment from administrators and faculty to support positive self-esteem in students
Strategy 4.1: Faculty Meeting Agenda’s should include diversity discussions with school administrators to reinforce diversity goals.
Strategy 4.2: Diversity activities designed to improve school culture and morale will be promoted.
Goal III: Encourage community involvement in creating an inclusive school environment
Objective 1: To enlist the cooperation of community organizations to conduct information forums on cultural competency.
Objective 2: To promote events related to diversity in the community.
