Board of Education Approves FY13 Budget and School Calendar

HENRY COUNTY, GA – During their monthly meeting on Monday night, the Henry County Schools Board of Education passed the recommendations made by Superintendent Dr. Ethan Hildreth for approval of the FY13 system budget and calendar.

The approved budget is $293 million, down slightly from the previous budget of $296 million.  This is the eleventh straight year of austerity reductions from the state and the fourth straight year of decline in the local tax digest.

During the past three years, county employees have endured furlough days as one of the cost saving, budget balancing measures.  This year’s budget will not require any furlough days.  Due to sound fiscal management by the board and the entire system, there was an opportunity to provide a full calendar for all of the district’s students and 5,000+ employees.

With no furlough days, student and employee calendars will be combined.  A full, 180-day calendar for classroom instruction will begin Monday, August 6, 2012.  Other dates of interest for the upcoming school year include:

  • Open House – August 2
  • First Day of School – August 6
  • Labor Day – September 3
  • Fall Break – September 24-28
  • Thanksgiving Break – November 19-23
  • Semester Break – December 24 – January 7 (teachers’ break ends January 4)
  • MLK Day – January 21
  • Presidents’ Day – February 18
  • Winter Break – February 19-22
  • Spring Break – April 1-5
  • Memorial Day – May 27
  • Last Day of School – May 31
