Kendall Named Georgia History Teacher of the Year
Winning the state award earned Kendall $1,000
and a multitude of books and historical resources for Eagle’s Landing High
School’s media center. Kendall will also get the opportunity to participate in
the Gilder Lehrman Teacher Seminar, and ELHS will now be designated as a Gilder
Lehrman Affiliate School. If chosen as the National History Teacher of the
Year, Kendall would earn $10,000.
According to the Gilder Lehrman Institute, to
be eligible for the award, one must be a full-time educator in any grade who
teaches American history, which includes state and local history. Qualifications required include at least
three years of teaching experience, a demonstrated commitment to teaching
American history, evidence of creativity and imagination in the classroom, and
effective use of documents, artifacts, historic sites, oral histories, and
other primary resources to engage students with American history.
This is Kendall’s second professional award
in the past few years, as she was also named the Gwen Hutcheson Outstanding
Social Studies Educator in 2011 by the Georgia Council for the Social Studies.
With each honor, Kendall is humbled by
the recognition from her peers.
“I am thrilled to be recognized for my work
in the classroom,” said Kendall. “It
renews my spirit to be honored by those who share my love for history and
history education.”
Dr. Aaron Randall, the most recent district
coordinator for social studies, added, “It is a true honor for Ms. Kendall to
receive the Teacher of the Year Award for her abilities in the classroom and
for the way in which she has her students interacting with primary sources
documents. She is a true asset to
Eagle’s Landing High and Henry County Schools.”
Kendall is starting her tenth year of
teaching in Henry County Schools and Eagle’s Landing High School.
