College and Career Ready Performance Index Released for State, District
Henry County elementary, middle, and high school grade level averages score above state
HENRY COUNTY, GA – The Georgia Department of Education released the much anticipated College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) today that provides measurements for schools and their districts using a 100-point scale. The first scores provided by the state take into account data from the 2011-2012 school year. Another CCRPI update will be released later this year utilizing the current school year’s data.
The state adopted the new accountability system after successfully petitioning the U.S. Department of Education in February of 2012 for a waiver from No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and its Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) indicator.
Each school received a score and the state provided average scores across each grade level: elementary, middle, and high school. The state averages for the three levels were 83.4, 81.4, and 72.6 points respectively. Henry County Schools earned average scores of 87.9 at the elementary level, 83.9 at the middle school level, 74.9 at the high school level. These scores are 4.5, 2.5, and 2.3 points higher than the corresponding state averages.
Henry County elementary schools’ average score was higher than 80% of other districts’ elementary scores. Both the middle and high schools’ average scores in Henry County Schools were better than 60% of other districts around the state.
While examining individual school’s scores from Henry County, 19 (out of 29) elementary schools, 9 (out of 11) middle schools, and 5 (out of 10) high schools scored at the same level or higher than the state.
Upon receiving the scores, Superintendent Dr. Ethan Hildreth noted, “The CCRPI Index provides a helpful overview of school progress. The Index supports our focus on student achievement and preparation for lifelong learning and achievement. The resulting data will help inform continuing school improvement efforts. We are pleased that our Index scores exceed the state average at every level and rank strongly in comparison groups, statewide as well as locally. However, we will press forward to ensure improvement in all areas as we encourage student learning and success.”
A school’s score and its district’s collective grade-level cluster scores are made up of three major areas: Achievement (70 points possible), Progress (15 points possible) and Achievement Gap (15 points possible). In addition to the three major areas, some schools receive “Challenge Points” to add to their score (up to 10 points). They receive these points if they have a significant number of Economically Disadvantaged students, English Language Learner students, and Students with Disabilities meeting expectations. They also receive points for going beyond the targets of the CCRPI by challenging students to exceed expectations and participate in college and career readiness programs. Beginning in 2013-2014, schools will also receive ratings based on their financial efficiency and school climate, but these ratings will be for the public’s information only and will not factor into the school’s overall CCRPI score. The Index has been designed around a comprehensive definition of college and career readiness, or the level of achievement required in order for a student to enroll in two- or four-year colleges and universities and technical colleges without remediation, fully prepared for college-level work and careers. This means that all students graduate from high school with both rigorous content knowledge and the ability to apply that knowledge.
Compared to Adequate Yearly Progress, the CCRPI scores earned by each school give a more accurate representation of the how the school is preparing its students. The data provides a more realistic narrative to share with a school community and contextual framework to guide them in making improvements for subsequent school years. This is a marked change from the “Made AYP” or “Did Not Make AYP” indicator each school and district received in the past.
Aaryn Schmuhl, Assistant Superintendent for Learning and Leadership Services, knows that rich information like that gleaned from the Index is key in guiding instruction for the district.
“Henry County Schools have performed above the state average consistently for several years,” said Schmuhl. “The CCRPI is just an additional way for us to look at our schools and data about our students to focus improvement efforts in those places where it can have the most impact. Our department will use the CCRPI reports to continue to target areas for support as we work to ensure high quality instructional practices in all classrooms.”
