Hampton Middle School Teacher One of
Symetra’s Heroes in the Classroom
HENRY COUNTY, GA – Students gathered in a special assembly last Thursday at Hampton Middle School to recognize one of their teachers. No one knew ahead of time just what the assembly was about, but that was quickly revealed when representatives from SunTrust Bank and the Atlanta Falcons showed up to share good news with everyone at the school.
SunTrust and the Atlanta Falcons, in partnership with Symetra Financial, recognized teacher Fredrick Braswell as one of their Heroes in the Classroom. The Heroes in the Classroom program is in its third year in the Atlanta area and seeks to recognize nominated teachers who 1) balance the core curriculum with students’ individual needs, 2) build trust among students, parents, and the community, and 3) invests in their students’ long-term success.
According to Principal Dr. Carolyn Flemister-Bell, Braswell meets the criteria and then some.
“Mr. Braswell is a model teacher,” said Flemister-Bell. “He cares about his students.”
He differentiates to ensure success for all of his students. Students thrive in his class and are excited to learn. He is a team player and always wants what is best for Hampton Middle School.”
With his family in attendance – his wife is also a teacher at Hampton Middle School – Braswell was called down to the floor to receive all the spoils that go with the title of a Hero in the Classroom. The honor netted the school $1,000 for supplies in Braswell’s name, an autographed Matt Ryan jersey, and tickets and a VIP experience for the Falcons’ Monday Night Football home opener against the Denver Broncos.
In a brief address to those in attendance, Braswell said he was a bit overwhelmed.
“This recognition means the world to me, but I would be remiss if I did not mention the plethora of great teachers and students at Hampton Middle School,” said Braswell.
The assembly was just as exciting for Braswell as it was for those in the audience.
“The manner in which I was recognized was overwhelming. It was also humbling to see that many people recognize and celebrate something I love to do each and every day, which is to lead, educate, and inspire young people to be great.”
Reflecting back on his 24-year career in education where he relishes the opportunity to see young people grow up and become productive and responsible citizens in society, Braswell notes the influences on him becoming a teacher.
“The factors that influenced me to become a teacher are twofold: one was my personal expectation to graduate college and the other was a neighbor who happened to be a professional educator.”
The teacher, described by school staff members as humble and one who would be totally surprised by the honor, knows there are several things he hopes his students progress from his class knowing, but he especially wants them to harness the potential to be great, despite all the negative energy that may surround them in society.
Mr. Braswell has been named by his peers as the school’s Teacher of the Year. He serves as a head football coach, Connection Department Chair, and is a member of the leadership team.
