Henry
County Schools Announce Bus Safety Poster Contest Winners, Participate in
School Bus Safety Week
HENRY
COUNTY, GA – Henry County Schools’ Transportation Department participated in
the annual School Bus Safety Week, October 20-24. It is an important time of the year to help
remind drivers to be aware of student transportation every morning and every
afternoon or whenever they see a bus on the road.
“This
week is an important time in our efforts to remind the public about being alert
and aware when buses are on the road transporting children,” said
Transportation Director Cliff Shearouse.
School
bus safety is a constant effort by district officials, and the community-at-large
should always remain mindful of the many students and drivers buses carry every
day. In Henry County alone, 24,000 out
of an enrolled 41,000 students utilize school bus transportation.
Stop-arm
cameras continue to help in the fight against illegal passing of school buses
by motorists who chose to put the safety and security of students and drivers
at high risk.
“One
driver passing illegally is one too many,” stated Shearouse.
Also
a part of School Bus Safety Week, the Henry County School System hosts School
Bus Driver Appreciation Day. Monday,
October 20, roughly 300 bus drivers were honored by the Transportation
Department with a cookout during the lunch hour. Shearouse noted how much it means to have a
dedicated force committed to transporting students safely each school year.
“We
like to show our appreciation with events like this when we can.”
As
another feature of School Bus Safety Week, the annual poster contest winners
were announced. This year’s school
system winners will have the chance to move on to the state competition.
More than 100 students from Henry County
Schools submitted entries across three different divisions: Division 1 – Kindergarten – 2nd
grade; Division 2 – 3rd –
5th grade; Division 3 – 6th
– 8th grade.
The
theme for this year’s contest was “Be Smart - Be Seen, I wait in a safe place!” Each poster had to incorporate the slogan
into its design.
According
to Shearouse, “The students did a wonderful job as each poster was creative and
uniquely designed.”
Winners
are as follows:
Division
1 – Morgan Minson – 2nd Grader at Fairview Elementary
Division
2 – Eliza Erickson – 4th Grader at Oakland Elementary
Division
