Woodland High School                     Summer 2012             Honors Spanish IV

Sra. Chinn                                         Room: 225                              ¡Viva el español!

¡Bienvenidos a la clase de Español IV!  (Welcome to Honors Spanish IV!)

Honors Spanish IV, although a natural continuation of Honors Spanish III, represents a transitional phase in which students take true ownership over their language development.  Students will not often be expected to take copious notes, but rather learn actively while in class as well as beyond the classroom walls.  Students will apply the language knowledge acquired during the first three years of Spanish and polish their abilities to listen, speak, read, and write in Spanish.  In addition, students will learn to integrate these skills, reaching a high intermediate level by the end of the year.  Students will fine-tune and grow in their vocabulary and grammar understanding and widen their literacy, communicative, and cultural skills.  Whether students are preparing for the A.P. Spanish Language course next year, a college placement class, or for college courses in Spanish, the information gained and the skills practiced and honed in Honors Spanish IV will definitely serve them well in their future at and after high school.

REQUIRED summer assignment for 2012 Honors Spanish IV students:

You will write a journal entry every week in Spanish:  June 4—July 23 (Habrá 8.)

This is due the first day of class and will be your first grade for this class—a Summative Assessment grade~¡Olé!.  It will count as a Summative Assessment grade. If you follow the instructions and do your best, you will do well.  ¡Haz tu mejor!  J

1.      Create a table of contents for your journal:  El índice.  Include herein the title/theme, the date on which you wrote, and the page number(s) which correspond to each entry.

2.      For each entry, write the date and time that you write in the top right corner.

3.      Using a black pen and skipping lines, write about what happens/happened/will happen during the week, where you go and what you do, in one--two pages per week.

4.      Use a variety of verb tenses, including the past tenses of the verbs and the subjunctive mood.

5.      Use your Spanish:  try to use vocabulary that you already know.  *Star* any words that you look up.

6.      Include at least three idiomatic expressions, underlining them in each entry.  See the list of idioms that follows here for some possible expressions to incorporate.

7.      Be ready to talk about your summer in Spanish in class.

8.      The journal is due at the beginning of the first class.  If not turned in on time a -5 point deduction for each day late will apply.

9.      You will earn 10 points for presenting in Spanish your summer work (talking about your summer—embelishment is welcome. J)

10.  If the journal in incomplete, 10 points will be deducted for each missing assignment.  When you turn the journal in, you should have from 8--16 numbered pages, written only on the front sides of each page.

11.  Spelling and grammatical accuracy shall be considered for your grade on this assignment:  See the rubric which follows for details and see Sra. Chinn if you have any questions.

Please see me if you have ANY questions!
