               CHORUS
GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS 2012-13

Goals:

 1) Successful LGPE rating

2) Successfully presenting a series of public performances

3) Attracting more students to chorus with similar goals and expectations

Expectations:

All students participating fully in class activities.

All students able to read music notation and musical vocabulary terms.

All students able to musically “problem solve.”

All students able to evaluate performance and make adjustments.

All students developing the self-discipline needed to achieve goals.

All students to communicate required information to parents in a timely manner.

All students to practice and prepare individual music parts outside of class time.

Dear Chorus Parents/Guardians,                                                                                                                    3/19/2013

The above statements have been on the chorus room board and website since early December. They were posted to reinforce the other information that had been previously sent home and posted in the chorus syllabus. Unfortunately we have been unable to meet our goals or expectations as a performing ensemble or even as a music class.

My intention is to never embarrass students that are giving their best effort or harm the reputation of the school and community that the students represent. For this reason I have made a decision that I have never in my nearly 30 year career as a music educator had to make; cancel our presentation at LGPE for 2013. I would rather have a blank year than have the work of last year’s choir be erased. Those organizing the Choir LGPE have been notified.

Too few students (+/- 30%) have put in the necessary effort to be prepared as individuals which means the ensemble is not ready. Our Black History Month program, presented in school, had only 31 of 100 chorus members perform. Those that presented did a good job but there were too few of them.

We have one more major presentation on May 16 at HMS. I hope the members will step up to the challenge. I will continue to look for additional performing opportunities for those that are making the effort.

With much regret and a heavy heart,

Dr. Thomas G. Cremer, Chorus/ Spanish Instructor

Hampton Middle School
