Young Men of Distinction

Young Men and Ladies of Distinction is a mentoring group for 4th and 5th grade boys and girls at Locust Grove Elementary who have the privilege of being a part of this group through teacher recommendation.

Mr. Shields started the program for young men in September of 2009 and is assisted by Coach Gorman,  Mr. McMichael, Ms. Hall and Ms. Carmichael.   When asked why he started the group, Mr. Shields response is as follows:  "I want to give back to the community and to young men in particular.  What is the use of being an administrator, teacher or serving in some capacity in education if you are not here to help the students!  Many young boys are growing up today without a father or any male figure in their lives and are desperately looking for a male presence in their lives."

Then in 2010 Ms. Lunn and Ms. Flath added the Young Ladies to the group. They felt that girls today need to learn to have positive self-images and self-esteem.  So many images they see on the television are not real.  We want to help them to be comfortable and confident with themselves. The Young Ladies work on lessons based on the Dove Uniquely Me program, which was developed by Dove and The Girl Scouts of America.  You can find out more about the Dove "Uniquely Me" program by clicking here .

The YLD/YMD meet twice a month.  The group has 4 primary areas of focus which are academics, social skills, community service and physical fitness.  Athletic/fun activities are incorporated to keep the young people motivated and service to others is constantly taught and expected.
