National Junior Beta Club
Purpose/Mission
The Stockbridge Middle School Beta Club is an honor organization that recognizes outstanding academic achievement, promotes strong character and social responsibility, encourages service to others, fosters leadership skills, and provides settings for students to develop strong interpersonal skills.
How do I apply?
Any student in grades 7-8 with a GPA of 3.5 or higher from the final school year (2011-2012) will be eligible to apply. All previous SMS Beta members must re-apply for the 2012-2013 school year. Applications will be available for pick up on Monday, August 6, 2012 in Ms. Gay’s room (619) and the front office. The application packet includes 2 teacher recommendations (one current teacher and one teacher from last year 2011-2012 must complete the forms) and one student essay. All completed application packets with essay, must be turned into Ms. Gay no later that Friday, August 24. Prospective students will then go on to participate in final round interviews which will be held on Wednesday, August 29, 2012.
MEMBERSHIP
Membership of the Stockbridge Middle Beta Club shall be comprised of students in grades 7-8 who meet a 3.5 or higher grade point average (GPA). Members should demonstrate worthy character, creditable achievement, and a commendable attitude. Upon acceptance of the invitation to become a member of Beta Club, members agree to the terms and conditions set forth in the Constitution and By-Laws, including but not limited to the following:
Academic expectations
Each Beta Club member is expected to maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher scale. Failure to maintain this GPA will result in academic suspension from the club for a term of one nine-week grading period. Should the member not improve his/her GPA to a 3.5 or higher after that time, he/she loses membership for the remainder of the school year.
· Service expectations
Each Beta Club member is expected to complete 15 hours of service during the
school year. Hours cannot be combined with any other club or service organization. Up to three (3) hours can be
earned outside of events scheduled for Beta Club. Failure to perform these hours will result in loss of membership.
· Meeting expectations
The Stockbridge Middle chapter of the National Junior Beta Club meets the second Thursday of each month, beginning at 8:15 a.m. Members are expected to attend at least three (3) meetings per semester to actively participate in the club and to make informed decisions about events.
· Dues
Each member pays annual dues in the amount of $25. Dues include membership into the local and national chapters and a Beta club t-shirt.
