The curriculum for gifted in elementary school follows a rotation program over a 5 year period. These interdisciplinary thematic study units form the core of the elementary gifted program as follows:

Year 1:

Architecture

Brief investigation into civilizations from cavemen to modern times through the types of structures people have constructed and decorated for various purposes.

 

Inventions

Focuses on inventions, the people and principles behind them, and research and experimentation.

Mysteries

Multi-faceted unit allowing creativity in written expression in forms such as video-plays, fiction, novels, and comic books as students set goals for the study unit.

 

*3-D Geometry

Infused in the thematic lessons throughout the year.

 

Year 2:

 

Law and Leadership

Employs problem solving, decision making and learning leadership/citizenship skills, as students complete assignments and experiences related to interpreting Georgia law as it applies to them.

Medieval Times

Discovery of the Middle Ages: reading, writing, and research on customs, literature, clothing, buildings, history, music, arts, and knights and kings; fairy tales in the oral traditions of the times with opportunities for puppetry and play writing.

 
Space Exploration

Uses problem solving, research, and experimentation to study space travel and solar system curriculum not included in their regular classrooms while also developing broad-based concepts of exploration in areas other than space.

*Tessellations

Any repeating pattern of interlocking shapes that cover a plane with a pattern, infused in the thematic lessons throughout the year, with emphasis on symmetry and the stained glass art of Medieval Times.

Year 3:

Greek and Roman Mythology

An introduction to Greek, Roman, and other cultural gods with emphasis on student creativity in writing about them.

Pioneers and American West

Research and experience-oriented study unit about settlement of the American West and Northwest in the 1800’s; problems that confronted travel in these areas with focus on pioneers rather than Native Americans.

Oceans and Islands

Interrelated study unit exploring properties of water, underwater phenomena and the web of life in the ocean and near the shore, the development of islands with natural ecologies and economies, with students "creating" and writing about their own islands after studying real ones.

Plane Geometry

Infused throughout the year particularly with quilting, weaving, and

other American handicrafts during the study of pioneers and the American West

Year 4:

Ancient Civilizations and Archaeology

Exploring ancient civilizations and their relevance to modern culture as students experience the tools and techniques of the archaeologist.

The Art of Poetry and Museums

Researching artists, experiencing and writing poetry in many forms as students investigate its relation to visual and performing arts and also receiving instruction in calligraphy and publishing.

The Science of Chemistry

Learning principles of chemistry while experimenting with solids, liquids, and gases and studying the properties of crystals, balloons, and bubbles.

Infused in study units throughout the year.

Year 5:

The Brain, Learning and Wellness

Learning about the brain and the learning process as students study the psychology of self-acceptance, valuing others, and tolerating differences; exploring advances in medical research and students designing a framework for personal healthy living within the community.

Caravans Geography Simulation

Student teams learning cultures, surface features of the earth, and strategy as they overcome obstacles in their search for lost treasures.

Literature Classics for Children

An introduction, from the students' point of interest, to readings, discussions, drama and writing centered around some of the richest literature of the ages.

*Mathematical Logic

Infused in study units throughout the year including many logic puzzles and possible simulations.

*The analytical focus to be infused into all three units for the year.
