  • The Maze Runner

Posted by Christi Harp at 1/14/2013
I read the Maze Runner by James Dashner over Christmas break.  At first I couldn't get into it because I had no idea what was going on.  I think this is what the author wants the reader to feel, because the main character Thomas has no idea what is going on.  He wakes up in this strange place with no memory.

After about 70 pages, I started to get into it.  It has a lot of action and is pretty violent (when they talk about the Grievers that roam around the maze).  Towards the end, I was on the edge of my seat and didn't want to put it down.

There are 3 more books in this series and I think there will be amovie made from this book.  If you liked The Hunger Games and Divergent, you would like The Maze Runner.  Give it a try and tell me what you think!

  • The Limit

Posted by Christi Harp at 10/22/2012
I am reading this book called The Limit.  It's one of the reading bowl books and the one we are reading for the Mustangs Read book club.  It's about this time in the near future where every family has a certain amount of money they can borrow from the government.  People can buy whatever they want- groceries, cars, golf clubs, computers, anything...but once you reach that limit, a member of your family is taken away to work in a work house.  The person taken away is the teenager.

That's what happens to the main character Matt at the beginning of the story.  He is taken away from his family and sent to a work house.  At first it seems pretty cool- each kid has a computer in their room and in their cubicle.  They go to work all day and then they have free time at night.  They have all types of fun stuff too- like their own indoor pool and dance studio.  They can also order any type of food they want.  But after a while, Matt realizes that they are trapped in that building.  The kids there keep getting headaches, and some of them disappear and no one knows where they went.

So Matt decides he wants to escape....

Do you think kids should have to pay for the debts of their families?  Do you think we will ever live in a world like this?

Also, I am reading a new book called "Insurgent" (part 2 of the Divergent series by Veronia Roth)- what should I read next?

Hey everyone!  Have you read any good books lately?  I have been reading a book called Divergent by Veronica Roth.  It's one of those futuristic books like The Hunger Games, where everyone is born into a faction.  When they turn 16, the people in this dystopian world have to make a choice as to what faction they will be in.

I am liking this book so far.  Have you read any good books lately? Click on the word "comments" to comment on my blog.

  • Among the Imposters

Posted by Christi Harp at 2/1/2012
This is the 2nd book in the Shadow Children series.  *****SPOILER ALERT: IF YOU HAVE NOT READ "AMONG THE HIDDEN", DON'T READ THIS!!*****

So, Luke escaped his house and is now attending a mysterious boarding school.  He does not like it- he is treated like a reject and bullied.  On top of this, the teachers are strange and the school has no windows.  Luke starts uncovering more and more mysteries in this book.

It was good, and in my opinion, just as exciting as "Among the Hidden".  I have started the 3rd one, "Among the Betrayed" and I don't like it as much- the main character is not Luke, so that's weird.  I will give it another chance and hopefully it will pick up.

  • Origami Yoda

Posted by Christi Harp at 1/13/2012
I read The Strange Case of the Origami Yoda over the break.  It is laugh out loud funny!  Fans of Star Wars will love it because it has lots of Jedi wisdom in it.  Even if you don't like Star Wars, you will think it is funny.

It's about a group of sixth graders who are trying to find out if Origami Yoda is real.  What is Origami Yoda?  He is a finger puppet that this annoying guy, Dwight, made and wears.  Dwight is sort of a freak who gets on his classmates' nerves.  But Origami Yoda is wise!  The students can ask him anything and he knows just the right answer.

So this book was written by his classmates.  It's sort of a "casebook" to figure out if Origami Yoda IS real or if it is just Dwight being a weirdo.

If you are looking for a break from the serious stuff and want something funny to read, this is the book for you!

What are some other funny books out there?

  • Among the Hidden

Posted by Christi Harp at 1/13/2012
Sometimes I am slow to catch on to things...like when people have been telling me about a book or series for about 5 years and I still have not read it.  I'm talking about Among the Hidden (it's book one in the Shadow Children series).

Well, better late than never- I finally read it on the holiday break!  It is so good!  It reminds me of "Hunger Games Lite", because they both deal with a future world where the government controls everything...only the Hunger Games is a little more violent.

Luke is a third child.  He has two older brothers.  In the world where he lives, parents can only have two children.  If they have more than two, the Population Police will take the child away and no one knows what happens to them.  Luke has spent the past 12 years of his life having to stay hidden.  His brothers go to school but he can't.  His mom and dad go to work all day and he has to stay inside.  He can't even walk in front of the window.  He stays in the attic all day, reading the same books over and over and looking out a small vent.  Luke watches the houses in his neighborhood- watches the families go to work and to school.  His life is boring and frustrating until one day...when he sees another face looking at him from a nearby house.

This book was so exciting!  I am on the second one now, Among the Imposters.  I think everyone would like this one.  Let me know what you think!

  • Thirteen Reasons Why

Posted by Christi Harp at 1/13/2012
I read Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher on the holiday break.  The book opens right after a student, Hannah Baker, has taken her own life.  A few days after the funeral, Clay receives a box in the mail that contains seven cassette tapes.  The tapes were made by Hannah before she died.  In them she describes the thirteen reasons why and people who influenced her decision.

Clay spends the entire night walking around town and listening to the tapes.

I could not put this book down!  It is about how the little things we do affect people in ways we don't know.  This is an awesome book!

  • Finished Mockingjay, what should I read next?

Posted by Christi Harp at 10/27/2011 2:10:00 PM
So, I finished Mockingjay last week and I loved it!!  I am so glad Katniss ended up with who I wanted her to end up with!!

Did you know that Suzanne Collins has another series called The Underland Chronicles?  It was written a while ago, and we have it too, so check it out!

Some popular series lately have been Rick Riordan series (geez...how many series can one guy have?  He has Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Kane Chronicles, and The Heroes of Olympus and they are so big right now, we can't keep them on the shelves!), The Shadow Children by Haddix (Among the Hidden, etc.), The Missing series by Haddix (Torn, Sent, etc.)., Fablehaven by Brandon Mull, The Dork Diaries, and The Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flanagan.

So what should I read next?  I like to read things that have action, adventure (but something that can keep a girl's interest), romance, history, but not so much fantasy or science fiction.  I am willing to give it a try (have read The Lord of the Rings before), but it is not my favorite.  Send me your recommendations!

Until next time, keep the pages turning and the lights burning!
