Writer's Workshop is a method of teaching using a workshop method.  Students are given opportunities to write in a variety of genres.  It helps to foster a love of writing.  The writing workshop allows me to meet the needs of the students by differientiating instruction and gearing instruction based on information gathered throughout the workshop.

Components of Writer's Workshop

Mini-lesson

The mini-lessons for Writer's Workshop teaches concepts, strategies and techniques for writing while encouraging students to write in different genres or styles.  The 10-15 minute mini-lessons give me the opportunity to give direct instruction to students and model the lessons using authentic literature or my own writing.  Sample mini-lessons can include:

  • procedures for Writer's Workshop
  • writing strategies and skills
  • literary elements
  • literary techniques (i.e. voice, descriptive words, etc.)
  • genre studies
  • text features

Independent Writing

The majority of the time Writer's workshop is devoted to independent writing.  During this time, students are prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing ther pieces.

Conferring

During independent writing time, I confer with students about their writing.

Guided Writing

During independent writing time, I can gather a group of students to work on guided writing.  I work with a group based on their needs.

Sharing

Sharing is an extremely important component of the Writer's Workshop.  During the share portion, students contribute what they did during their independent writing time wither with the whole group or with a peer. This gives the students the opportunity to observe and learn from each other.
