The Superintendent of Schools is appointed by the Henry County Board of Education and serves as Chief Executive Officer of Henry County Schools. Key functions supported through the Office of the Superintendent include governance, strategic planning, accountability, and communications for the continuous improvement of student, school, and system performance.

Dr. Carl Knowlton was appointed Interim Superintendent of Henry County Schools, effective March 7, 2024. Prior to serving in this role, he served as Chief Human Resources Officer for HCS and Chief of Staff to former Superintendent Mary Elizabeth Davis.
Dr. Knowlton has served Henry County Schools for more than 20 years, beginning as assistant principal of then-Henry County Middle School in 2002. He went on to become assistant principal of Austin Road Elementary School and founding principal of Tussahaw Elementary School, before transitioning to the District Office in 2014 to serve as Executive Director of Human Resources.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education, as well as Master of Education and Education Specialist degrees in educational administration from Arkansas State University. He also holds a Doctor of Education degree in educational and organizational leadership from Nova Southeastern University.
With a wealth of experience at all levels – from teacher to principal to district-level executive – Dr. Knowlton understands the importance of positively connecting with school board members, employees, families, businesses, local/state officials, and most importantly students.

The District Strategic Priorities outline the collective focus and goals of Henry County Schools. The priorities will be developed into a long term Strategic Plan that will be reviewed and updated annually to ensure it remains current and relevant in communicating the district’s direction for continuous improvement.
