Welcome to the homepage of the Dutchtown High School English Department. Our goal as teachers is to provide a rigorous, challenging, and relevant English curriculum that will prepare you for college or a career. However, what we are able to accomplish in the classroom begins and ends with YOU. No matter what the grade or course level, each and every student at DHS must develop a consistent habit of reading, including both fiction and non-fiction. When we return to school on August 5th, our expectation will be that you have been reading diligently over the summer and are ready to go to work.
We have provided recommended summer reading lists (mandatory for AP Literature and AP Language; highly recommended for all other classes) tailored to each grade level. In addition, click on the "Summer Reading Plan" link for a plan to incorporate both fiction and non-fiction reading into your daily activities.
In addition to specific course requirements and recommendations, "How to Read Literature Like a Professor," by Thomas C. Foster, is required reading for all AP and Honors level classes in 10th through 12th grades. Each of you should have your own copy of this text, as you will be required to reference it frequently throughout your DHS academic career.
If you have any questions about our expectations for you in our English classes, don't hesitate to talk to your teacher.
